Getting a camera?

This is a simple advice for those who are thinking of getting a camera or a digital-camera to be exact.

Yesterday, I was at my cousin’s place and she was asking what kind of camera they should buy. She showed me a bunch of digital cameras they are looking at from a magazine. They were thinking of getting a DSLR or just the simple “point and shoot” kind (Viewfinders). I said some pointers to her and maybe it will also help you out.

You have to consider some things first. If you’re going to buy a DSLR:

Ask yourself, why? Why are you going to buy a DSLR?

Are you ready to learn how to really use one? What I mean to say is that if you’re going to buy one, at least, learn the basics of photography; lighting; shutter speed settings; ISO; aperture settings; etc. There are a lot of things you can do with a DSLR and yet there are a lot of Viewfinders now that can almost do the same, IF you’re not the type who’d consider the framing, foreground, background, and or the lighting dependencies of capturing a photo.

Also, are you sure you want to carry around a bulky camera in your bag all the time?

I am not degrading anyone to get a DSLR. If it’s going to be your hobby, then by all means do so and at least consider these things before buying something that you might just put on a shelf and let it gather dust.

If you’re not really sure, then just buy a viewfinder so you can carry it everywhere and capture those moments where you don’t have to think, “I should have a camera right now.

If you are going to buy a DSLR, check the things that it can do; Test it before buying.

Oh, and another advice: “the bigger megapixel, the better?” It’s not exactly true. It’s how you compose your photo. Again, consider these things: aperture; lighting; shutter speed; angle; foreground; middle ground; background; then get some tips online or buy a book about photography.

:)

Enjoy and good luck!
