What has a computer done for you?

Writing an essay about a computer is such a general topic. Although to simply put, the computer has made me lazy. While growing up, I only got my hands on a computer when I reached high school. There was a point in my life that I relied too much on the MS word to correct my grammar that I never did give any much attention that maybe at some point, the MS word can also be wrong. Playing solitaire half of the time while waiting for dinner to be served. When the internet came, I also relied too much on the internet to find words that I could use for a more eloquent or an articulate manner of writing for my essays. Although, I still did some real research through the use of libraries or encyclopedias to compare my finding. A computer is also another form of an addictive substance, add an internet connection, you’re gone. You are out of here – meaning you are glued to your seat and in-front of a computer almost 24/7. In my case, I can’t live without it.

computer in the modern world

computer in a modern world or in my world?

Nowadays, having a computer is a sort of cheap entertainment when connected to the internet. We have download-able games, free-wares, online games, online chat, online social networking websites, open forums, blogs, video sites, and (for the bitter truth) pornography. As the saying goes, “the internet is made for porn”. I am not saying that I use the internet for that but that may sound too much of a hypocrite. I can understand why some companies block some websites on office hours; it is to limit their employees to waste time on nonsense activities instead of focusing or giving 100% of their attention to give quality work then again there are times when you just need to find a way to release office stress other than smoking. To a person who was born in the computer age, what is life to them if without these cheap entertainment? I’d think it will add more high-blood pressure and head-aches.

Adding contrast to the topic, it made most of the modern life easily accessible. For example: Business transactions made faster through emails, online shopping carts, and money transfers; Documents in a paper free environment, no more wasted crumpled papers in the trash can, no more type-writers, no more correctional fluids; Free information at the tip of your hands; real-time communications made possible; and meeting new friends. This is not the point. The internet is indeed a source of good and bad product but to sum it up, having a computer is part of my life and what I do. I am a web designer: the computer is my tool. It should not be the one controlling me. However, if it were not for the computer and the internet, I would not have made a conscious effort to study on my own or purchase certain books to compare my research and the knowledge that I gain.

This topic, in actuality, is about a recent affair that I encountered with someone I know and this is simply a form of outburst for the lack of a better term to express what is in my head. I cannot describe what exactly has happened that day but it started with this topic and how it made certain people who relied too much on a computer to solve their “problem”. I read some essays from college students whose English teacher has condone to mediocrity on proper English grammar. In all my life, growing up and studied in a public school, this is not how it was taught to us. I’d have to thank my parents on how they always nag on me to read the dictionary every single day and how they insist that I should do my own research for my homework and assignments from school.

How I wish to give out examples of those students’ write ups but I do not want to destroy anyone’s integrity and having said that, through this and with this article of mine – I may already have.

Bato-bato sa langit, ang tamaan huwag magalit” – a Tagalog/Filipino proverb or saying. In rough English translation means, “Stones from the sky, those who gets hit shouldn’t get mad.”

    Hi Diwa,

Just visited your site and it looks good and clean. Just sharing my viewpoint about computers. I started designing and illustrating during the days when computers were non-existent and hand drawn, hand painted artworks were a must during those times. We had to really know how to draw to survive in a way. When computers entered the scene, this changed the way we live and work. As the world is entering into a fast pace climate and tasks had to be completed quickly, the computer was the savior. I had to diversify and adjust from hand drawn to digital graphics generated thru the computer. More workload was needed since people believed with the computer we can accomplish more in a shorter span of time. And I did not have to mess up with color paints splattered all over the table in rendering designs. Softwares and hardwares became more advanced and easily accessible to ordinary people.

    Thanks

  • Hello Spencer,

I know exactly what you mean. Though, some people think that creating digital art is easier than traditional art. It may be "cleaner" and faster but being able to know how to compose the artwork is still within the artist.

I know I grew up adapting in the computer age but whilst I do, I also had the experience of illustrating art by hand in college. I actually envy those who have been practicing traditional art since I have low level of skill on that matter. Knowing how the strokes of each brush; the feel of the thickness of the woven canvas.

    Cheers,
    Diwa
